The head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, presented a set of measures as part of the security strategy to prevent car theft and dismantle criminal cells involved in this crime. In a conference on Tuesday, January 21, Brugada explained that actions such as raids and increased police presence in areas with high theft rates will be implemented.
The head of the Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC), Pablo Vázquez, added that campaigns will be carried out to prevent vehicle theft and mentioned the possibility of holding a technology fair. For her part, Bertha Alcalde, head of the Attorney General's Office of Mexico City, emphasized that the measures will facilitate the issuance of search and arrest warrants.
The strategy against car theft in the Mexican capital targets not only the criminals who commit the thefts but also those who sell auto parts illegally and other services related to vehicles that may be linked to criminal activities.
Clara Brugada announced several action axes in her strategy against car theft in Mexico City. These include promoting the safe purchase of vehicles, preventing the irregular sale of auto parts, installing 66,000 cameras to reinforce the video surveillance system, creating a command center dedicated to vehicle theft, and a specialized cabinet that will meet weekly and have the support of various entities.
Additionally, reforms will be implemented to regulate the buying and selling of auto parts, ensuring the traceability and legal origin of the products. Brugada pointed out in a press conference that the planned command center will have access to data from satellite tracking companies, as well as to reports and emergency calls, in order to coordinate immediate actions with the Security Secretariat.
